All training is done ethically to promote learning and relationship building. Positive reinforcement is highly effective when used correctly, your horses wellbeing and mental state is a priority.

Equine Training

The utilization of positive reinforcement training is growing in the equine industry, partly led by its effectiveness in zoos with herd flight animals.

During my career in the zoo field, we were able to teach Hoofstock species to load themselves into trailers and display their feet for trims and upkeep.

Using positive reinforce is especially effective with prey animals because it removes or reduces their flight response to stimuli and builds resilience and trust.

Horses are much stronger than ourselves, when they learn to use their size to avoid an unpleasant or scary stimulus, physical pressure through equipment is often increased to gain control. However, teaching equines by reinforcing behaviour is much calmer, less dramatic, less stressful and altogether safer for the animal and humans involved.

Understandably, using a training method that is unfamiliar to you can be daunting, not to mention, unsuccessful. Going against the grain of standard approaches and taking a different route can be lonely, receiving judgment from others.

Gaining more information from reputable sources will ease concerns. There is no need to dive in with a clicker and drastically change your horses care.

Resources: The NAC Natural Animal Center have developed a course for professional horse trainers to become registered and accredited under the ABTC to provide positive reinforcement training as the equine industry develops towards a modern and more ethical approach.

If you would like to talk about positive reinforcement training, and are interested in implementing this approach with your own equines, but want support and advice, we want to hear from you!
